The
Public Distribution System shops, which usually distributed Palmolein oil, have
started distributing coconut oil in 100ml bottles to beneficiaries from May 18,
2015. According to officials, the coconut oil would be supplied in all the 756
ration shops in the district.
Maharajan,
a shop salesman said that the cost of the 100 ml bottle was Rs.33. Officials
said the government's objective was to supply quality coconut oil at a
reasonable rate to the public. It is expected to prevent the crash in coconut
prices.
Likewise
giving subsidy for coconut oil would increase the demand for coconuts and push up prices. Supply of coconut
oil in fair price shops would enable the coconut growers to get remunerative
prices for their produces.
Earlier
in the year 2010, The Tamil Nadu Coconut Farmers Welfare Board has recommended
the Government to introduce the sale of coconut oil under the public
distribution system and to
open regulated market for coconut in each block in the State.
